Bow drill spindles

I've only done one bow drill fire in my life, then moved on to the hand drill. Now I want to learn more about the bow drill. I just harvested some spindles and I'll give them a try when they dry out....

The hard woods do'nt usually make good fire sets[oak,ash,maple]Cotton wood,and willow good.I keep things simple,and use thesame wood for hearth,and spindle.fiddler49

Cottonwood and willow. I have gotten coals from a willow hearth and a much harder Birch spindle. The hearthboard is the more important of the two imho

Just to add more confusion to the topic.Some good info already... Willow on willow work fine same with Cottonwood on cottonwood ..and any combo of those with each other. Ash on willow or on cottonwood...
